One of the earliest and biggest centers of Algae cultivation is the New Mexico state in the United States. But everything has a humble start at the beginning, Nicolas of Apogee has written an article about the development of algae cultivation in the New Mexico desert.
It starts with a research plan for making oil from algae in the 1970's. Even-thought the project was not feasible for large scale commercial oil production, but it has developed a large database about many different algaes and its potential applications for the sociaty. The current ongoing development of Omega 3 production at IWI is a direct descendant of the algae research.
As you just read New Mexico has been the center of algae cultivation in the United States for many years. It has not all been about fuel production, we currently have folks cultivating algae as an organic soil amendment for the Cannabis industry, and of course spirulina as people fuel.
With this inspiring story, the DQS is working hard to make a similar "story" in the country side of Da Nang, Vietnam. We hope that our small contribution today, will be the stepping stones for the further development in the future, as we, too, believe in the unlimited potential of algae for the human society.Reference: Apogee-THE HISTORY OF ALGAE CULTIVATION IN NEW MEXICO
